A COURAGEOUS mum who has a crippling disease has raised more than £13,000 for charity in a single night.
Tina Fay, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in May 2006, raised the cash at a special event for 200 friends and sports fans.
The 55-year-old from Marine Parade West, Lee-on-the-Solent, held the 'white night' at Lee-on-the-Solent Tennis, Squash and Fitness Club where she was a personal trainer and tennis coach before the disease took hold.
The event, which included a raffle and auction, raised an incredible total of £13,582, which will be used in the battle to find a cure for the horrific disease.
The night, in which everyone wore white, is the latest fund-raising event by Tina, who has now raised £35,000 for the cause this year.
She said: 'It went better than I could have ever dreamt – I was only hoping to raise £8,000, so I just can't believe how much money the night made.
'Raising the money makes me feel better because it means I'm actually trying to do something.
'Any money that can help go towards this can only be a good thing and I hope that the money raised can go towards helping people in the future because it's just such a horrible condition.'
Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive neuro-degenerative disease that attacks the upper and lower motor neurones.
Degeneration of the motor neurones leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing.
When she first learnt of her condition she went swimming with whale sharks, skydiving and travelled the world. With her condition worsening she plans on having one last trip before she has to use a wheelchair.
Tina is due to fly out to Barbados for a week in November, which will be her last ever trip while she can still walk unaided. 'I just won't give in yet and use a wheelchair,' she said.
'I think it annoys the hell out of everyone because I can be so slow, but I want to get through until Christmas while I can still walk.
'But travelling is becoming such hard work and I think I'll have to clip my wings, then I can spend time with the people I love.'
Tina has stopped fund-raising for the year, but plans on having another charity night next year.
