Coffee shop row threatens market

MARKET organisers are considering pulling out of Gosport High Street after a row broke out over coffee shops setting up tables and chairs outside.
Gosport's market, which attracts hundreds of people on Tuesdays and Saturdays, may move to a car park after complaints were made by traders.
The move would be a blow for the High Street, which has seen several shops close in recent months as shoppers are tempted away to Fareham and Gunwharf Quays.
Two coffee shops have complained to the borough council that they have the right to put out chairs in the High Street for free, but market organisers say they have the right to charge them fees.
The News has seen a letter from Mike Jeffery, development services manager at the council, which states 'market stalls always take precedent' and adds that the cafes don't have the right to put out tables and chairs on market days.
But Gosport council is to look into whether the market can charge shops, at a meeting of its community and environment board.
Should the board decide that the matter needs to be addressed when it next meets, it has the power to order the market operator not to ask shop owners for money to put out tables and chairs.
Graham Rush, a director at Hughmark International, which runs the market, said: 'If they keep complaining about this, then we might just move the market because it just seems to be causing us too much trouble.
'These coffee shop owners are giving us a lot of problems, when we aren't in the wrong. Most of the people who come down High Street on market days are there for the market and it would be a blow to the street.
'We would stay in Gosport, but look at moving to a car park, so we don't have all this trouble.'
Ivano Lucie, owner of Lu Chino's cafe, told the council market representatives said he had to pay on Tuesdays and Saturdays when the market was on. Costa Coffee has also made a complaint.
Leader of Gosport council Councillor Dave Smith said: 'We have had complaints from both Costa Coffee and Lu Chino's – it's something we will look into and we will get to the bottom of this.'

Once again we have the minority dictating to the majority.
How long has the market taken place in Gosport High Street?
How long have those two establishments been in Gosport High Street?
Would it not be sensible for these two establishments not to have table and chairs out on Tuesday and Saturday, why take a selfish attitude against the market.
If the market moves else where and people use the High street less, those customers who would have used the coffee establishments become less, less trade means a possibilty of closing down , is that what you Ivano Lucie and Costa Coffee want?
Come on you two, grow up and act in an adult fashion, its only two days a week and think of the trade the market brings not only to both of your establishments but to the High street as a whole , which badly needs it.Is it so hard not to have table and chairs out on those two days?
If Costa Coffee and Lu Chino's cafe cannot compromise then I see that both of the businesses will flounder through lack of custom and possible backlash from locals for possibly forcing the market to move

Why should they pay the Market Company - do they own the high street on market day? The market traders (except one or two who are generally rude and aggressive) are generally a pretty good and fair group, surely Hughmark should stick to taking revenue from the people they are contracted to take money from, and not from companies who are there day in, day out, and who already have to pay to meet customer demands. Perhaps the market should move off to a car park - call their bluff and see how many traders keep coming back to put money in the pockets of Hughmark. The market is nice, but if they want to try and blackmail the Town Hall, then tell them to set up somewhere else.

ALL the shops in gosport town centre struggle to make ends meet and stay open. It has been the case for years and years. Coffee shop owner should be allowed to put chairs and tables outside their own shops like they have done for years. The market traders have enough space move slightly up or down as they are not a permanent fixture and be able to accomdate evryone already existing in the high street without compromising their buisness. Coffee shops already pay enough in business rates etc and a mention of an additional charge is nothing short of disgraceful and an insult to them. The coucil were only too pleased to accept them when they started their shops to try and make the town centre more relaxed. Lets support our existing shops and make sure they are not compromised when the market (which is also important) is in town.

Hughmark seem to think that they have the Council over a barrell because if they pull out the Council will get the blame. However, long gone are the days when Gosport had the biggest market in the South. The merchandise sold is clearly poor and they haven't filled the high street with stalls for years. Hughmark are to blame for poor management so hopefully the Council are trying to line up another company to take it on. There are rumours that a more up market market (excuse the pun) want to take it over so maybe Hughmark's days are numbered. The High Street looks much better with tables out for the coffee shops etc. If Hughmark pull out of Gosport their market traders will be very unhappy, trying to convince them to move to an empty car park because they weren't given the authority to shake money out of local business' pockets will not go down well with anyone.
