RESIDENTS say they will suffer days of misery after a controversial music festival was given the go-ahead.
Police had appealed to magistrates not to grant the licence for the five-day Stokes Bay Festival.

But the festival organisers have now agreed to a raft of conditions such as limiting numbers to 2,500 people each day – 500 less than previously per
mitted – and locating the big top at least 245ft away from homes.

No alcohol will also be allowed to be taken on or off the Bay House School playing fields, off Military Road.

However the conditions haven't pleased residents who say their peace will be shattered when the festival – featuring bands including the Proclaimers and The Zutons – gets under way next month.

Elaine Roberts, 54, of House Farm Road, Gosport, said: 'I'm just devastated. This is just going to have such a big impact on our lives.

'The noise is our biggest concern – we bought a quiet residential home and it's not going to be that while this festival is on and I'm honestly sickened by this.'

Jacqueline Greenhalgh, 56, also from House Farm Road, added: 'We are going to have to live with the site being set up, the music taking place, then the site coming down and it will just be 15 days of misery.

'We are going to be bombarded by noise and it's being imposed upon us – it's not something we want.'

The festival is due to take place from July 29 to August 2 and will also feature the Saw Doctors and Seth Lakeman.

Festival organiser Peter Chegwyn – also a Gosport councillor – said: 'We are absolutely delighted that the festival is going ahead.

'It will bring a lot of money into the town and provide local businesses with a much-needed boost.

'We will work with residents to ensure that any concerns they have will be addressed.'

Typically negative News reporting. Most people in Gosport are delighted to see festivals like this in the town.

Impressed - not.,

Last year was great, this will be just as good. If the good residents of the local area could refrain from fainting, or at least do it on stage, we would be grateful. As for buying a "quiet residential home" - I seem to remember there being a dirty great military base there which flies helicopters, and a pub! 15 days of putting up with people having a good time - I am sure you could lift the curtains of despair and try and take part!

I honestly think that after the festival has taken place, these residents will be embarassed by their hugely 'over the top' reactions. 15 days !!??

Poor old NIMBYs. Whilst at least they will only have to suffer for 15 days whilst the majority of people enjoy themselves.

Funny, not one story knocking the festival, the reason, well it's because it's GOOD for the Town, I am not happy that it is were it is, when I purchased my Season Ticket I thought it would be at the same site as last year, so I am disappointed at that, having said that, I am very pleased it is on, well done to Mr Davey. What the protesters should be doing is to campaign now to make sure it goes back to the REAL Stokes Bay next year,. Now that would be interesting, Tory V Tory on that one !!

The residents reaction to the festival's go ahead is one of the reasons that gosport town is dying. instead of realizing that something needs to be done they prefer to try and bury their heads in the sand then moan when something that is positive for the area happens. The Stokes Bay Festival will bring in some much needed revenue's to the area as well as an attempt to put Gosport on the cultural map.

From the way the NIMBYS's complain one would think that the council has ordered them to open up their gardens so the festival can be held at their own house.

I would advise Drunkmonkey that Gosport Council has nothing to do with this purely commercial venture.

As a concerned festival go-er(with no other vested interest),bearing in mind the hassle and the posts done on the subject,I find Cllr Allen's comment above ironic and hilarious on many different levels!

There you have it NIMBYS. I hope you are prepared for 15 days of 24 hour music, devil worshipping, animal sacrifice, street riots, looting, nudity and scenes akin to those from The Wicker Man.

On the otherhand you could look forward to one of the very few positive things that happens within the Gosport area and enjoy it with the thousands of other people who will be attending. You could even go so far as to support it. Why not buy a ticket and try it?

Brilliant news! Can't wait for the festival to start so I can see the Saw Doctors, The Zutons and The Proclaimers.....all satanists to a man and well known for playing knock and run on locals houses just to keep them up.....Seriously though this will draw in a lot of people from elswhere in the country, as it did last year, and once again prove to be a crime-free, people-friendly event.
