CONTROVERSIAL plans to turn Fort Gilkicker into luxury homes will go before councillors next month.
Developers want to transform the fort at Stokes Bay, Gosport, into 26 hi-spec flats.

A public consultation into the plans ended yesterday, with eight letters for and eight against the multi-million pound project.

Now it's up to Gosport council's planning committee on November 11 to decide whether to give it the go-ahead. Don Gordon, chairman of the Fort Gilkicker Action Group, which has been fighting plans to redevelop Gilkicker for years, said: 'It will be of no benefit to the people of Gosport. It will just be an enclave for affluent newcomers.'

The flats would be built inside the original gun casemates of the listed ancient monument.

There will also be a display room featuring artefacts uncovered in an archaeological dig at the site, which is expected to take months and will be held before work begins on the development.

Developer Askett Hawk said the flats could be finished by spring 2010.

That's gonna blow a hole in the planning for the next Stoke Bay Fetsival then!

Oh, for crying out loud.

Let me spell it out in case our councillors are mentally deficient.

1. There are no jobs in Gosport.
2. People must therefore work outside.
3. The A32 is jammed from 8am-10am and 4pm-6pm for this reason.

Now, consider the following hypothetical situation, with the above in mind.

You are The Planning Councillor - a fun game for all.

A developer has come into your office with an application for a block of Lego-style flats in Gosport, on the site of Fort Gilkicker.

You know that the town cannot support any more traffic.

You also know that the housing market is dead, particularly concerning new-build flats.

Would you answer:

a)

"I'm sorry, we can't build any more flats, the infrastructure won't allow it. Also, we have a duty to preserve our historical pieces in the area for tourism's sake.
Jolly good. Time for some cake."

or:

b)

"Ah, lovely. Good chap, of course we'll approve it. Think of all the juicy council tax we'll get.
What's that? Local history issues? Yes, yes, never mind. The locals will get over it, they're too stupid to care.
Jolly good. Time for some cake."

A little back hander will be made to ensure the builders get there way.

Lets look at the biggger picture. This is an Ancient Monument which is of great importance to the history of coast defence in the UK. It deserves a better future other than letting it fall down. This plan is the only viable future for the fort and it will include a small interpretation centre for casual visitors with viewpoints for them to look out over The Solent. When will The News start reporting a balanced viewpoint on this development rather than quoting a self appointed expert who claims to represent 'The Public' but really only represents himself and a small minority group of protestors? This fort belongs to the Nation and must be preserved for future generations.
