An £11m cash injection will create nearly 100 jobs in Gosport with ambitious plans to build a new fitness centre and revamp school sports buildings.
Bay House School and leisure developers Oak have revealed plans to transform sporting facilities at the school's 20-acre Browndown sports site in Alverstoke.

The school's dilapidated sports hall will be revamped and a new members' gym will be buil
t featuring a fitness suite and changing rooms, a new full-size all-weather floodlit pitch and two refurbished rugby pitches.

There will also be new community facilities including a nursery and children's playzone and a family-orientated health and sports club.

The health club will feature indoor and outdoor tennis courts, squash courts, swimming pools, a kids' club, a health and beauty treatment area, spa, dance and fitness studios, and a restaurant with sea views.

And about 100 new jobs will created in the town, which has been haemorrhaging employment recently.

Two weeks ago it was announced all 310 jobs at Covidien – formerly known as Tyco Healthcare – in Fareham Road would be axed, while 90 jobs were scrapped at Huhtamaki in Rowner Road.

If planning permission is given for the centre building work will start next spring to avoid wintering Brent geese, and it will open to the public by the end of next year. An artificial pitch will be built this summer.

Bay House School headteacher Ian Potter said: 'With so much emphasis on the need for our children to play more sport and combat the problem of obesity these vastly improved games and health facilities will give the children the incentive and means by which to enjoy playing more sport.'

>> The school will hold open days about the plans on Friday from 3.30pm to 6pm and on Saturday from 9am to midday.
