A MULTI-MILLION pound bus link between Gosport and Fareham to relieve congestion could become a reality – if enough residents have their say.
A high-speed bus route is being proposed along the old railway line from Holbrook to Fareham railway station.

Plans are going on show to residents of the two towns before a final bid for £20m is submitted to the government.

Hampshire County Council says views from the public could help boost the project's chances of success.

Councillor Mel Kendal, who is responsible for transport issues at the county council, said: 'The consultation will be an opportunity for people to understand what we are aiming to achieve and tell us what they think.

'This is an important part of the development of the business case which will be submitted to government in the bid for funding for this first phase.

'The concepts people will see are work in progress and the contributions made by local residents and businesses will be invaluable in influencing the final designs.'

The bus scheme is a part replacement for the tram linking Fareham, Gosport and under the harbour to Portsmouth, turned down by the government after the need to deepen the harbour for new aircraft carriers added £100m to the estimated £170m cost.

The new bus scheme – which will cost a total of £175m – will be done in stages.

The first phase of the project will see large buses setting off from Gosport every seven-and-a-half minutes and heading up the disused railway line to Fareham train station.

Over time the route will eventually link Fareham and Gosport with Portsmouth, Queen Alexandra Hospital at Cosham and the site of a proposed housing development for 10,000 new homes in North Fareham.

The bus scheme is one of 15 transport projects put forward by the South East England Regional Assembly as part of a bid to relieve traffic congestion. If given the green light, the proposals are expected to be implemented between 2016 and 2018.

Consultation times

Gosport – Bridgemary Community Sports College in Wych Lane:

October 16 – 3.30pm to 8pm;

October 17 – 9am to 1pm and 5.30pm to 8pm;

October 18 – 9am to 6pm.

Fareham – Civic Offices:

October 20 – 10.30am to 5pm;

October 21 – 9am to 5pm;

October 22 – 9am to 5pm.

How come this "part replacement" for the tram scheme will cost almost as much as the original tram scheme? It doesn't include the tunnel link with Portsmouth which is where a large part of the cost of the tram schemes was so what is all the money being spent on? If the funding was not there for the tram scheme which is a much more effective overall solution to the areas transport needs then why is it there funding for this part solution?

Of course, if we let this half-hearted scheme go ahead then we're not going to see any improvements to this corridor for 50 years.

The plans just aren't substantial enough to be any good, if a job is worth doing it's worth doing properly.

The current plan is incomplete. The "High Speed" bit stops before the bottleneck of Brockhurst/Forton Roads.

It needs to be extended to Leesland Lane. Then it can follow the usual routes into the centre. All the usual A32 stops will be properly serviced. The Elson links can still peel off at Polar Cup (or whatever it is called these days).

A dedicated high speed bus route exists in North Kent, so it can be done; however, we're talking about slomo HCC and FBC here.... :O))))))

Sounds like a vast amount of money for a bus route that only goes halfway into Gosport. And why on earth will it take 8-10 years to build?!

The bus link in Whiteley took eight years to build , cost 800k and is about 3 metres long. It isn't often you see 'high speed' and 'bus' in the same sentence

What's the problem? ,

Fareham 16/10/2008 10:13:37
This is a ridiculous suggestion! How many peple in the morning and evening rush-hours actually only travel between Holbrook and Fareham Centre? Very few I would imagine - if you choose to take your car on the congested A32 then I would guess that you travel beyond Fareham so this proposed folly would be of no benefit to the A32 users. They have wanted the coastal by-pass to Junction 11 for as long as I can remember. It was suggested back in the 70's!!!!!
Would it be better to survey all Gosport residents (inc Less-on-the-Solent and Stubbington residents) and find out where the majority work and route the 'high-speed bus link' accordingly? I would suspect that many work at Segensworth and Whiteley so the super dooper bus thing would be better used to those destinations surely?

What's the problem? ,

Fareham 16/10/2008 10:15:47
Sorry - I didn't mean to type Less-on-the-Solent obviously I meant Lee - please accept my apologies Lee residents! There isn't an edit facility unfortunately.

We will never get a coastal by-pass. the Fareham local authority will not permit it.

It is in their interest to stifle the A32 and see Gosport die on the vine!......... Local Politics!
