Conservative leader Councillor Mark Hook is to be put forward as leader of the council but the new Lib Dem leader has vowed not to let him take the reins of power.
Lib Dem Cllr Peter Chegwyn has taken over as leader of the party and will put a can
didate up for election against Cllr Hook.
The Labour Party refused to reveal whether it will continue to work with Lib Dems.
But Labour councillors have been voting in a pact with Lib Dems over recent months and it is expected that this would continue for the leadership vote. Cllr Chegwyn said: 'Mark Hook was a complete disaster when leader of the council two years ago.
'He introduced car parking charges then resigned as leader when he couldn't get his way on anything else.
'Now he claims to have changed his mind on parking charges just days after the Conservatives lost seats to the Liberal Democrats in last week's elections. The man changes his mind with the wind.'
He added: 'Liberal Democrats are not going to let him grab power again and put at risk all we have worked for over the past two years.'
The leader of Gosport council is set to be elected at a meeting on May 15.
Despite the Lib Dem move to topple the Tory bid, Cllr Hook has vowed that he will not back down.
'All I can say is that the people of Gosport spoke at the elections and we got 53 per cent of the vote – the people want a Conservative council,' he said.
'I will still be standing for leader of the council and it's up to the Labour party to decide what they do.'
The news comes after Cllr Hook last week said he would stand for leadership despite the fact that the Tories lost a seat at the elections, meaning they have 16 seats compared to Lib Dems' 14 and Labour's four.
The current leader of the council, Labour leader Cllr Shaun Cully, refused to comment.
