War memorials targeted by thieves
Security measures are being reviewed in our area after bronze plaques were stolen from war memorials.
Thieves ripped off plaques, inscribed with the name of more than 400 sailors and Royal Marines who lost their lives defending Britain, from a memorial at Plymouth Hoe, Devon.
After a spate of metal, lead and copper thefts, Gosport council is concerned thieves may target its memorials.
The council is already looking at its policing of parks and monuments after slides were stolen from Walpole Park in recent weeks.
Lib Dem leader, Councillor Peter Chegwyn, said: 'We are now reviewing all our procedures because of the metal thefts but patrolling everywhere just isn't possible.
'We haven't lost anything from our war memorials yet but it seems like these people will steal anything.'
