PEOPLE are being encouraged to take advantage of lifesaving electric blanket checks.
Hampshire County Council's trading standards service has teamed up with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and councils to offer free safety checks at venues across the county.
In the last seven years alone, almost 8,000 blankets have been tested in Hampshire with 40 per cent of these failing the safety checks.
The main problems are many are old, worn out, have poor wiring, broken controls or offer no protection against over-heating.
Council leader Ken Thornber said: 'I would urge everyone who owns an electric blanket to book their slot and take advantage of an opportunity to make sure they not only stay warm and comfortable at night, but safe.'
The safety checks are only available by pre-booked appointment. To reserve a place telephone 01962 833620.
Checks will take place at Havant Council Chambers on October 8, Petersfield Fire Station on October 14 and Ferneham Hall, Fareham, on October 15.
