Hilary Englefield, 80, had discussed taking her life with her son several months before she was found dead on Sunday, March 16.
It was not known when she died, but the inquest into her death heard there were three days' worth of newspapers piled o
utside her home at Brampton Court in Stock- bridge Road, Chichester.
Her daughter Melissa Briggs had tried phoning her but there was no answer, so at 1.20pm on March 16 she went to visit.
With the help of Pamela Sherry, house manager at the sheltered housing complex where Mrs Englefield lived, she unlocked the door to her mother's apartment and found a note on the floor. It told her not to enter and to call the emergency services.
Mrs Englefield was found lying on her bed, with another note beside her.
The inquest heard she had taken sleeping pills and had suffocated.
West Sussex coroner Penelope Schofield said: 'This is a very sad case and it appears to be one of a lady who had concerns about her health deteriorating and she did not want to be a burden on her family.
'From the evidence that has been provided there does appear to be a conscious decision to end her own life.
'I propose that Anne Englefield took her own life.'
