PARENTS should make sure children are 'kitchen clever', firefighters have warned.
The Fire and Rescue Service is using Child Safety Week, which runs until Sunday, to show parents that teaching by example is the best way to ensure youngsters are aware of the dangers of fire.

Jackie Boyle, community safety officer for West Sussex Fire and Rescue, said: 'The kitchen is where many fires start in the home. It is crucial that parents know the facts about kitchen fire safety.

'This is so they can pass on valuable knowledge to the whole family.'

The advice includes never to leave cooking unattended and always to have pot handles facing to the back.

Firefighters also advise parents to let their children know where the keys to doors are in case a fire starts.
