MINISTER Ben Bradshaw has hailed health officials for slashing waiting times at Portsmouth hospitals.
New rules from the Department of Health to be implemented by December state that no patient should wait more than 18 weeks from referral to treatment.
Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust – which runs Queen Alexandra and St Mary's Hospitals and some services at Royal Hospital Haslar, in Gosport – has hit the current national target five months early.
Latest figures, from July, show 92.79 per cent of patients admitted to hospital were seen within 18 weeks – well above the 85 per cent government-set target.
And 93.6 per cent of patients who did not need to be admitted were seen within 18 weeks in July, against a target of 90 per cent.
Mr Bradshaw wrote: 'This is a fantastic achievement by local NHS staff.'
