People in Portsmouth will be taken to new heights in a bid to get them to think about the impact deafness and hearing impairment can have on people's lives.
As part of Deaf Awareness Week, which begins on May 6, the Spinnaker Tower management are inviting people to find out more about the different methods of communication used by people who are deaf, deafened, deaf-blind and hard of hearing.
The Sensor
y Impairment and Deaf Services team will be manning a stand on the first viewing platform at the Spinnaker Tower and people will also get to learn about sign language, finger spelling, and lip reading.
Mark Hutchinson,
manager of the Sensory Impairment and Deaf Services team said: 'For people who are deaf or hard of hearing, aspects of everyday life that the rest of us take for granted can be a challenge, from something as simple as hearing the doorbell or
watching television at a volume that doesn't disturb other people.'
There will also be a hands-on display of equipment and technology designed to help people who are deaf or hard of hearing to live as independently as possible.
Mr Hutchinson added: 'We hope the stand will help us to raise awareness of the challenges faced by one in seven people in the UK who are either deaf or hard of
hearing.
'As well as being able to demonstrate some of the latest equipment, we can also offer advice on training, benefits and employment.'
The stand will run from 10am-3pm on Tuesday May 6.
