A boy of 13 who secretly set up a major event in his mum's memory has raised more than £2,000 for the hospital that cared for her.
More than 150 people flocked to a charity evening in aid of Queen Alexandra Hospital after Thomas Ingram's bravery was highlighted in The News.

Despite losing his 40-year-old mum Karen to cancer non-Hodgkins lymphoma only last month, Thomas managed to persuade staff at Eastleigh Lakeside Steam Railway and Country Park to donate the venue and steam trains for Tuesday's event free of charge.

He then approached John Deere, creator of hit BBC children's show Underground Ernie, and not only convinced him to allow the famous Ernie train to be used free of charge for trips on the night, but also to waive the £995 fee for a performer to appear.

Mr Deere was so touched by Thomas – who organised the fund-raiser without even his dad knowing – that he drove from London with his family to make a special appearance.

Thomas, from Doyle Avenue, Hilsea, who ran the event with the help of brother Harry, 10, said: 'It went really well. There was a great turn-out. I was surprised at how many people turned up because it wasn't the best of weather. I can't believe I've done it. My mum did a lot for other people and I wanted to do the same.'

Dad Mike, 45, said: 'I'm searching for words to describe what he's done. At first I didn't think he could achieve this because I didn't think people would be prepared to help. I had no idea so many people cared.

'For Thomas to pull this off in such a short space of time is incredible. He's amazed me time and time again.

'I'm proud of both of my kids. They did really well – they even took turns on the microphone for the raffle and the auction. I can't believe it.'

Proceeds from the event will go to the Rocky Appeal for three keyhole operating theatres at Queen Alexandra Hospital.
