THIS WEEK IN 1993: ‘Despicable’ attack on Armistice Day

Have your say

Just two men can be glimpsed in this peaceful shot of Victoria Park, Portsmouth, on a summer’s afternoon.

So we can assume it was taken in the middle of a working day when only Victorian or Edwardian nannies, and perhaps a few mothers, were taking the air with their children and perambulators.

The aviary, which remains to this day, is in the mid-distance while St John’s Catholic cathedral dominates the background.

Then, as now, the municipal beds appear immaculate, But they look as though they were fenced, unlike their modern counterparts.
