A reader dropped a line to The News letters page last week after seeing our old photographs of Commercial Road and asked how many pubs there were there.
I can tell you. In the 1934 Licensed Houses list it shows there were 27 publicans between The Yorkshire Grey to the south and the Hearts of Oak by Kingston Crescent plus 15 beer houses between those and two licences held by chemists to sell wine.
On Portsea Island alone there were 284 publicans and 386 beer houses. There were also 66 off licences selling beer only. Some pub crawl. I understand there are now just 73 pubs on Portsea Island.
