The sun blinds are down covering the shop fronts. Two lads in school uniform amble along the pavement and a horse and cart in the distance plods towards the camera.
This idyllic street scene is undated, but judging by the clothes and cars, was probably taken in the 1930s.
This is Elm Grove, Southsea, on a sunny afternoon between the wars. Nobody seems to be in a rush. The gents on their bicycles (three without hats, you notice) and the women with the pram are serenely going about their business.
The shrubs in the front gardens of the houses on the right are in full leaf so it looks as though it could be any time after May, but still the majority of people are wearing coats.
Apart from those two lads in their short trousers and their distinctive caps. Perhaps they were summer issue?
Does anyone recognise to which school they belonged?
