The Country House Tavern in Portsmouth has been mentioned several times on this page over the past few months and these two photographs sent in by David Wilkie show how the building looked in the past and how it was just before demolition.

The black-and-white photo was taken in 1950 and we can see it was no 342 Commercial Road.

The colour photo was taken when this fine building was demolished to widen Commercial Road. What a great shame.

Mind you, the way pubs are closing in the Portsmouth areas these days I don’t suppose the Country House Tavern would have stood the test of time!

Beside the pub can be seen Ben Grubs’ army surplus stores.
