Can it really only be 1975 when this picture was taken of the road bridge over the railway at Hilsea Halt station, Portsmouth?

This unusual piece of engineering joined Rat Lane to Airport Service Road and Marconi Space and Defence, now BAE Systems. The bridge and Rat Lane were replaced by Norway Road.

The picture comes from Philip Pyke of Westwood Road, Hilsea, who says: ‘In theory the bridge would have one-way traffic in the mornings to the Airport Industrial Estate and the flow would be reversed in the evenings to allow traffic to leave the estate, but many a time cars would meet on the bridge and one of them would have to back down, both physically and mentally!’
