This four-horse brake was pictured outside the Fountain Inn beside The Green in Rowlands Castle in 1900.
The roof line of the houses and the Railway Hotel in the background has hardly changed, unlike the pub. Behind the horses you can just make out the trap doors which went down to the hostelry’s cellar.
The bicycle dates from about 1896 and would have been a much-prized possession.
As today, the village was a popular destination for cyclists and day trippers in the early years of the 20th century.
