It would take someone of the age of 55-plus to remember this scene along Commercial Road at the junction of Church Street.

The picture here earlier this week of a bus dressed in the colours of Radio Victory, rekindled memories for Ted Saunders.

He dug out his 1984 book about the Portsmouth area’s former commercial radio station.

Ted, of Frobisher Grove, Portchester, says: ‘It is filled with photos of the characters we were used to hearing: Matt Hopper, Penny Guy, Ted Trafficator, Chris Carnegy, Arnold Gutbucket, Shep Wooley, Andy Ferriss, Pam Spriggs and many more.

‘These were household names 30 years ago when they broadcast from the former school in Fratton Road.’

Miss Radio Victory that year was Pauline Ferrier who got her picture on the cover. ‘Ah, those were the days,’ muses Ted.
