Back to the swinging ’60s - The hovercraft landing

The first sight of the hovercraft

I have included this picture not so much for the view but for the cars of the late 1970s or early 1980s. Picture: John Rich

NOSTALGIA: It only seems like yesterday... but these cars in Portsmouth are now classics

Have your say

Do you remember when the hovercraft landing beach was first created and the frightening experience it gave everyone?

I’m told hovercraft were originally meant to land along Eastney Esplanade near the model village. The noise did not appeal to the locals up that end of Southsea and so the landing area was relocated close by Clarence Pier where it has been ever since. The spray and shingle would blow across the road and many visitors received the fright of their lives when the hovercraft mounted the beach and came towards them like a behemoth. In the background a County Class Cruiser is entering the harbour.
