This aerial shot shows Broad Street and Point, Old Portsmouth, in 1955.

The slipway for the Isle of Wight ferries can be seen at the end of Broad Street, while the cranes of Vosper’s shipyard tower over the Camber.

Opposite them the coal bunkers of Fraser and White lie alongside Town Quay.

The north-west side of High Street from the cathedral to Broad Street has been cleared of its bomb-damaged buildings, but the remains of the porticoed city museum can just be made out opposite St Thomas’s.
