Bob Gray was saddened to learn that the old Southdown bus depot at Hilsea, Portsmouth, is to be demolished, for it brings back many happy memories.

He served his apprenticeship in the bodyshop there from 1954 to 1960.

Bob, of Funtley Road, Fareham, says: ‘I have acquired and restored two of the former Southdown coaches, the type which we had at Hilsea at that time.’

And he has sent me these pictures of them in all their sparkling gory.

He would also like to trace any of the staff who worked alongside him, particularly the families of Les Couzens who, Bob says, ‘took many photos at the time’.

He is also keen to track down a Tom Matthews ‘who was the correspondent for the staff magazine’.

If you can help please contact Bob at Meadow Cottage, 189 Funtley Road, Fareham, Hampshire, PO15 6DP.
