Proposals for a new Portsmouth-based royal yacht have stirred memories of Britannia – the last floating home for the royal family.

She arrived in Portsmouth, where she had been a proud and much-loved fixture for her 43 years afloat, for the final time on October 20, 1997.

After she was decommissioned there was no replacement and a maritime tradition, which dated back 300 years to the launch of the first royal yacht during the reign of Charles II, ended.
