Here we see two shots of a familiar Portsmouth sight – the main gate at the former home of the Royal Marines in Cromwell Road, Eastney.
Surprisingly little has changed.
The central pillar was taken away many years ago when lorries became the norm and would have had trouble getting through the narrow gateway.
The lamps above the remaining pillars have changed and the mortar to the top left has gone.
The shrubs have overgrown either side of the gate and a red telephone box stands there.
I wonder how many Royals used to phone their girlfriends from here in days past.
I bet there were many extremely important conversations conducted in that phone box.
Much of the barracks was demolished, but the former messes have been turned into exclusive homes including the clock tower to the rear. The area is now called Marine Gate.
I wonder if any of the children standing outside are still with us. It’s nice to see a building that still looks so familiar today.
