Roy Thompson’s recent picture of these seamstresses at work in Gosport in about 1914 rang immediate bells for Ivan Johns, of Funtley Lane, Fareham.
He thinks his mother might have been in the picture.
The women were plying their trade in the workshop of Messrs Rowe and Co in High Street.
Ivan said: ‘My mother, who at that time would have been 17 or 18, was working there and is probably pictured.
‘Unfortunately I cannot recognize her.
‘My mother often spoke of her time at Rowes and said her weekly wage was 1s 6d (8p). She also walked each day to her place of work from San Diego Road where she lived.
‘However, her sewing skills came in handy later on and she made many clothes for us when we were young.’
Does anyone know which one might have been Mrs Johns?
