Have your say

David Janes has recently been given this picture showing Portsmouth dockyard in the late 1940s.

And he would like some help identifying the ships please.

David, of Rectory Close, Alverstoke, Gosport, says the photograph was the insert in the dockyard’s 1949 Christmas card.

He says: ‘The view is of No3 Basin and more than 60 years on contains much of interest, particularly for ex-dockyard and naval personnel.

‘It would be interesting if someone could identify the ships including the one with the dark-painted hull at the far side of the basin which would seem not to be a naval ship.

‘Shadows and dress suggest it was taken late on a summer’s afternoon, presumably in 1949.’
