In February 1930 workmen digging near the Round Tower, Old Portsmouth, unearthed several links of a huge chain which at first was thought to be part of the 16th century ‘Mightie Chain of Yron’ which was stretched across the harbour mouth as a defence.

However, the links were later believed to be part of a chain laid down in about 1800 when fears of a French invasion were rife.
