Jenny Vincent, from Havant, sent me some wonderful photographs of the Bedhampton area and an aerial photograph of which I have enlarged a corner.
It shows the old scrapyard in the chalk pit alongside Portsdown Hill Road.
It belonged to the Southern Counties’ Demolition & Trading Company and it was here that several of the old dockyard steam locomotives ended up.
It closed some time before 1976 when the new A3 was driven through Bedhampton to the west of the yard.
Later the AMF bowling alley and various stores, including Homebase, were built within the former chalk pit.
