This fascinating aerial picture from June 1973 shows a corner of Portsmouth which is now changing fast – Tipner.

Dominating the foreground is Harry Pounds’s scrapyard, the graveyard for all things nautical and much more.

You can just make out a couple of submarines, two minesweepers and some barges among the dead ships.

Above it is the old Tipner greyhound track while to the right there is no sign of the M275.

And in those days the notion of parking and riding was simply something jockeys did at Goodwood.
