The photograph by Eddie Wallace I published on March 19 of the crowds at the Guildhall to see General (formerly President) Ike Eisenhower was seen by former Portsmouth Evening News Naval Correspondent Tim King.
Tim left the Evening News in 1961 to join the Southern Daily Echo.
He was given the task of covering the visit of Ike to the former D Day HQ at HMS Dryad in Southwick. This was followed by a call on the Lord Mayor, Councillor Sotnick at the Guildhall.
Tim says that Ike was very charming and it was hard to imagine he became the most powerful man in the most powerful nation.
And there was Tim, alone with him for five minutes. Imagine that today.
