On this day in 1941 George Balfour died. He was born in Portsmouth in 1872 and founded the company Balfour, Beatty and Co in 1909.

Balfour played an important role in the development of the electrical industry in the UK, and served as Conservative and Unionist MP for Hampstead from 1918 until his death – from John Sadden’s The Portsmouth Book of Days.
