Here’s a Portsmouth street scene which is barely recognisable today.

This picture shows Lake Road in June 1976.

It comes from the collection of Philip Pyke, of Westwood Road, Hilsea.

We see the old crossroads of Lake Road with Church Street, which is on the left, with what used to be Leonard Road opposite.

Leonard Road is now Holbrook Road and the traffic lights have been replaced with a large roundabout.

To help get your bearings, the car on the left is heading west towards Commercial Road while the car in the centre is travelling from Leonard (Holbrook) Road, turning right into Lake Road and heading east.

Philip says: ‘I believe the cinema was the Apollo which later became the furniture shop Blundells.’
