Sea breezes, sunshine and comfort,’ proclaimed The Evening News on July 27, 1927, as the Savoy Café and Ballroom opened on South Parade, Southsea.

Hard on the heels of an inspector’s controversial decision to allow flats to be built on the site of the much-loved old Savoy, Portsmouth music historian Mick Cooper supplied me with these cuttings from the paper harking back to a golden era on the seafront.

It was about this time that The Tatlers Super Jazz Band seemed to be playing at every function in the city and beyond.
