In this photo of Venice sent in by Edward Gowing we see the Battle class destroyer HMS Solebay entering Venice in 1957 with the stern of the cruiser HMS Birmingham also in the shot.

You can only imagine the gasps of delight from the ship’s bridge as they entered the Grand Canal with St Mark’s Square and the Bridge of Sighs in background.

Edward served from 1945 until 1959 and Solebay was his last sea-going ship.
