Everyone who was a fan will never forget the period drama series that took in nearly 60 years of history. Indeed it was the Downton Abbey of the 1970s.

Upstairs Downstairs was a must-watch programme about a large London house, its residents and staff.

Over the years many well-known actors and actresses appeared in cameo roles, but the downstairs staff remained the same for basically the whole series.

The maid was played by Jean Marsh who, at the age of 78 is recovering from a stroke 14 months ago. The actress was once married to Doctor Who actor Jon Pertwee.

Over the many years of acting Jean has been seen in The Saint, Department S, The Persuaders, Jane Eyre and many episodes of Doctor Who, to name but a few.
