On this day in 1949 the Ealing film Kind Hearts and Coronets, in which Alec Guinness played eight roles, was released in the UK.

Its source novel was written by Roy Horniman, who was born in Southsea in 1872, lived at Cottage Grove and attended Portsmouth Grammar School – from John Sadden’s The Portsmouth Book of Days.
