On October 30 I published a picture of what was Flathouse Road running behind the naval barracks, HMS Nelson.

It was once a right of way.

A comment on The News website is worth repeating here.

‘Ketch_2’ has written: ‘I believe the RN detention quarters backed on to this road. It was not uncommon to find a note tied to a length of cotton dangling from a cell window begging for a cigarette to be tied on.’

Only in Portsmouth, eh?
