Here are two pictures to remind us that torrential rain and its aftermath have always been with us and always will be.

These were the scenes in Old Portsmouth 102 years ago after a deluge coincided with a spring tide.

The old town’s flood defences have been improved immeasurably in the past 20 years, so scenes like this should, hopefully, be a thing of the past. But there again...
