Have your say

If you want to visit the cinema in Portsmouth these days, there is Gunwharf or the UCI at Port Solent.

But just look at the choice you had back in 1954.

There were no fewer than 18 picture houses on Portsea Island alone.

There were two in Gosport, the Forum and Criterion, and one each in Havant and Waterlooville.

Cosham was blessed with one at either end of the High Street, the Essoldo and Odeon. I saw Zulu at the Odeon and Jason and the Argonauts at the Essoldo.

With the population many times greater than 60 years ago and just the two cinemas to fill, it makes one realise just what an impact television has had.
