Along line of visitors queue to go aboard HMS Victory during the August 1931 Navy Week.

In front of Victory three submarines lay alongside – L16, L52 and L22.

For one shilling (5p) admission, visitors could see HMS Hood, Warspite, Renown and the aircraft carrier Courageous.

HMS Nelson was in dry dock and the visitors could walk in the shadow of her huge hull.

Five hundred hikers descended on the city for the event and many camped on Portsdown Hill.

One man walked all the way from Leith, Scotland, taking a fortnight to complete the trip.
