Brothers Jonathan and Matt Ring lovingly collected photos taken by their grandparents and published many in their book, Portsmouth From Family Archives.

For the rest of the week we’ll share photos from the book on this page.

Now the site of Gunwharf Quays, this picture shows HMS Vernon a year before it was closed in 1986.

Taken from Millgate House, Portsea, it shows trains heading into Portsmouth Harbour train station, with HMS Vernon on the left.

Shoppers will now know this as the pedestrian entrance to the shopping centre – although the building on the right still remains.

The book is available to buy from Waterstone’s in Commercial Road and Bonzo Studio and Southsea Gallery on Albert Road for £14.99.
