Recent pictures here of the changing face of Portsmouth reminded John Cheshire of this event in 1987 at Landport.

John and workmate ‘Lou’ Richardson were working for the city council’s highways department and were asked to remove this tree from the Merry Row site at Lake Road.

John, of Copnor Road, Copnor, Portsmouth, says: ‘The site had to be cleared and the big tree had to come down with some protest from the locals.’

But as the tree toppled the giant rootball exposed something of interest.

John continues: ‘Under the tree we found a tunnel, perhaps an air raid shelter, which led back to the shops or one of the pubs.’

Does anyone know more about this tunnel and where it came from?
