How many of you remember the man who used to drive around the city in a camper van in the early 1960s advertising short flights from the city airport?
As I remember, anyone wanting a flight waved him down and then, I assume, when he had a vanful, he would drive off to Hilsea and up everyone would go. I think the fare was £5 a trip but I stand to be corrected.
Before that there was a regular flight from the city to the Isle of Wight and all for less than £1 return.
To and from Ryde it was just 53p.
This hand-drawn poster advertising the flight showed an aircraft over the Solent with the Queen Mary beneath. A paddle steamer and South Parade Pier are in the distance.
