It was August 4, 1960 when the mighty HMS Vanguard ran aground in the mud at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour while on tow to Faslane for breaking up.

In this Eddie Wallace photograph, we see the Vanguard from the Still and West pub at Point, Old Portsmouth.

Crowds of holidaymakers and locals flooded to the scene to take photographs of the stranded ship.
