In the press there are many occasions you read of people being ill after eating contaminated food. As I have said so often in this column, there is nothing new under the sun.
Ninety years ago, at the new year’s mayoral dinner in Portsmouth, more than 80 guests became seriously ill after eating contaminated oysters.
The mayor, Frank Privett, became one of the chief sufferers. He was unwell for the next six weeks and only restored to health at the end of the following February.
