Val Walker is hoping readers can help with some history.

She is the new owner of the old Gravediggers pub in Highland Road, Eastney, which has just won a design award from the Portsmouth Society.

Val says: ‘We have all the original deeds going back to the 1820s and know the pub was built as The Victoria Beerhouse, later The Victoria Arms, sometime in the 1860s.

‘We also know that it was originally a pub and a separate house and was completely re-modelled around the turn of the last century. The row of cottages behind were built by the owner (Kensington Cottages, later known as White Cloud) and sold off by Youngs after they bought the whole site in the 1890s.

‘We have a couple of photographs of the pub in 1962 and 1966 and have just traced one from 1947, but would love to find more of either the pub, inside or out, and the cottages behind.’
