This historic picture shows Commercial Road, Portsmouth, looking south in a photograph taken about 1905. Today it is Guildhall Walk.
The red-brick Prudential Offices, built in 1891, can be seen on the immediate right. The Theatre Royal and Charter House were built in 1900.
The modern picture here of Guildhall Walk shows the old Walkabout bar which largely occupied the site of the old Hippodrome, built in 1907.
Leading music hall artists appeared there, including Marie Lloyd, George Robey, Little Titch and Gracie Fields.
In the In Pictures package associated with this story, we see a postcard containing images of another of the street’s most famous buildings – the one-time Yorkshire Grey pub.
It was named after the horses used by the city-based Royal Artillery.
It was converted into a bar in 1980 and has undergone a number of changes since.
In Pictures also includes a modern day photograph of the Yorkshire Grey.
