Ray Rowsell, from Denmead, was intrigued by this photo of water being drawn from a cask at a Soberton pub.

I was wrong to suggest the number on the barrel dated it to 1902 as he says the numerals related to the cask number.

He adds: ‘The Horse and Jockey at Hipley, not far from Soberton, had deliveries of water from Brickwood’s in Portsmouth until about 1960. I cannot be sure when mains water was connected, but I doubt deliveries would be made in cask if mains water was available.’

When he was a lad in the 1940s he remembers the Hammertons brewery in Malthouse Road, Mile End, Portsmouth. Does anyone else?
